Mel moves with more grace than any of his university colleages, Evan realizes, a little awed by the contrast. Hell, so many people at ALASTAIR had moved with the grace of those comfortable with their bodies. He's tried hard to do keep up the training Haise had begun him on, wanting to do honor to the memory of his time with the team, but oh, he's fallen off the horse the past year hasn't he?
But those are an under-murmur of thoughts and he stares at Mel as he can spare his gaze between watching the stairs and navigating the stairwell switch-backs. Belatedly he flashes the elf a grin, volleying back that smile, and he even manages to keep much of his distraction from it. "I can't say I'm unhappy to see you again, either. I really thought I'd never get the chance..."
He hears the door swing open on the landing above them and the patter of footfalls down the stairs, and he jogs ahead of Mel, putting himself between the elf and the girl about to pass them. It's mostly a successful move, keeping Mel from getting an odd look this time. Evan keeps his tongue still until the other student has passed.
"Although I could have hoped for easier circumstances." There's apology in his voice, and tight worry.
